Hi Guides,

We will be shifting over to a new Guides website so this blog will no longer be in use. The new site is: http://bit.ly/rivervalleygirlguides

Also, tomorrow's act marks a new beginning for all of us. We will be embarking on a new journey together as a company. West Division Day Competition

Hi Guides, 
West Division Day is here again!
Below are some details of the competitions that will be held on West Division Day, which is on 16th August 2014, from 8.30am to 12.30pm, at Zhenghua Secondary School.
There will be a registration fee of $2, and food will be provided for all participants. All Guides are strongly encouraged to sign up for the competitions :)
There are much more interesting new competitions this year! The competitions available are Poster Making, Costume Making, Telematch, Captain Ball, Mini Gadget Making, Amazing Race, Escape Room, Change The Lyrics and Sandwich Making.

Details for Competitions for West Division Day 2014
Theme: Education opens door for all girls
1.      Poster Making

Objective/Aim:
To get Brownies and Guides to design a poster that brings out the theme “Education opens door for all girls”

Description:
Each group will design a A3 size poster using the materials provided for them
(One piece of A3 size paper per group, newspapers, magazines, coloured papers).
NOTE: Groups that use other materials other than those provided will be disqualified.

Judging criteria: Refer to the attached rubrics.
Duration: 45 minutes
Number of participants: A team of 4
Materials to be brought by participants: 
Participants to bring stationery, scissors, glue / double-sided tape and colouring materials eg coloured pencils, markers, crayons.

2.      Using recycle materials to make costume--Ramp Walk

Objective/Aim:
To enable Brownies/Girl Guides to be creative in designing using given materials and do a simple catwalk with the outfit.

Description:
Each group needs to design an outfit using given materials and dress up one of their members as their model. Teams that do not follow the requirements will be disqualified.  All craft pieces will be collected and judged and the winner will be announced at the end of the day.  Guides/Brownies are not allowed to pre-design any part of the outfit.

Duration: 45 minutes

Judging Criteria:  The team that is able to do best catwalk without any damage to the designed outfit wins.

Number of Participants:
·         A team of 4 guides/brownies from each participating school
·         5 teams of Brownies and 5 teams of Guides per 1 hour timeslot

Logistics required: ( Item 3-6 To be brought by the guides/brownies of participating schools)

3.      Telematch Games

Objective/Aim:
To get Brownies and Guides to appreciate games which they can play together

Description: 
Each group will play in a telematch comprising of 3 games – Burst the balloons, Fill the Bottle and Ping Pong Basket .

Description:
  1. The first station is Burst the Balloons – where the first 2 members of the team blow 5 medium size balloons, tie it up and burst it after that. The brownies will blow 4.
  2. After completing the first station, the third member will play " Fill the bottle" game by using a sponge to collect water from a pail of water and squeezing the sponge out 2m away from the pail into a 1.5 litre of water. Brownies will be 1m away from the pail.
  3. The last member will play " Ping Pong" Basket, where she will proceed to capture 5 ping pong balls into the basket stationary.
 






Judging criteria: The fastest team wins.
Duration: 10 minutes per team (2 teams per 10 minute slot – 1 for Brownies, 1 for Guides)
Number of participants: A team of 4
Logistics required [all materials provided by organising school]:
1)      2 stopwatches
2)      4 sponges (dishwashing sponge)

4.       Captain’s Ball

Objective/Aim:
To promote bonding and sportsmanship among girls through Captain’s Ball. Captain’s ball also aims to improve the girls’ stamina and interest in sports.

Description:
A guide from each team will be placed on a chair. Each team is to score as many goals as possible in the 5 minutes of games. Schedule will be given and teams are to report at the time given to play against other teams.

Judging Criteria:
     Through rounds of elimination of 5 minutes per round, top 3 prizes will be given for guides and brownies.

Duration: 5 minutes per round

Participants:
     To accept 6 teams of brownies and 12 teams of guides.
     7 brownies/guides per team.

























5.       Mini-Gadget Making Competition

Objective/Aim:
1.       To provide an opportunity for brownies/guides to develop their creativity by using minimal materials to create miniature gadgets.
2.       To promote teamwork among brownies/guides as this activity is done in a group.
3.       To provide an opportunity for brownies/guides to acquire dexterity skills as this activity involves the use of hands predominantly.

Description:

Guides
Each participating school will create a picnic table inclusive of benches or chairs and a kitchen dresser. The guides have to construct these two gadgets using only satay sticks, toothpicks, chopsticks, ice-cream sticks and string. Usage of glue is not allowed. The completed gadgets should be mounted on A3 size Styrofoam board for display and judging.

6.       Amazing Race
Objective
To promote teamwork and forge closer ties among the Guides/Brownies.

Description:
Each team will be given 45 minutes to complete the stations which are placed around the school. At the stations, Guides/Brownies will be tested on their knowledge of Guiding/Brownies or will need to apply the skills they have learnt. Upon the completion of the task at each station, they will be given a clue to the location of their next station.


Judging criteria: The team with the most number of correct answers wins.


Duration: 50 minutes


Number of Participants: 5 Guides  per team



7.       Escape Room

Objective/Aim:
To promote teamwork and problem-solving skills among the Guides/Brownies.

Description
Each team will be placed in a room which they need to escape from. There will be clues and activities placed around the room which will enable them to escape from the room.

Judging Criteria
The team who emerges from the room within the fastest time wins.

Duration: 30 min

Each team to be made up of 5 girls





8.       Change the lyrics competition

Objective/Aim:
To create opportunities for Brownies and Guides to bond with their family members and forge closer ties through working together.

Description:
A total of 4 brownies/guides per pack/unit. Each team may select any songs. Using their creativity, the team must change at least 4 stanzas of lyrics from their selected song to suit the theme on ‘Education opens door for all girls’. The creative version of the song must be performed on the spot together with their family members. However, the tune of the original song must remain the same.

Judging criteria: see below

Logistics/ Materials required: Song list, Rough paper, Score list, Songs in MP3 format saved in mobile phones/MP3/CD (To be brought by the participating school)

9.       Quiz Gameshow style

Objective/Aim:
To enable Brownies/Girl Guides to be more aware in WAGGGS and applying their knowledge from which they learned from badges

Description:
Each participating team is made up of a team of 4. Each team will take turns to answer the questions.

Judging criteria:
1st round : 100 points for each correct answer. (If team fails to answer correctly, other teams can answer the question, but only 50 points will be awarded)
2nd round : Speed round : 200 points for each correct answer. (If team fails to answer correctly, 100 points will be deducted)

Logistics/ Materials required: Song list, Rough paper, Score list, Songs in MP3 format saved in mobile phones/MP3/CD (To be brought by the participating school)

10.   Sandwich making

Objective/Aim:
To let girls have a chance to come up with creative ways to make sandwich.

Description
The team of 4 Guides / Brownies are to make a sandwich from the ingredients they bring. They should only prepare the food at the venue. No cooking is allowed. After the sandwich has been made, they are to explain to the judges how they made it through writing. Their explanation should include information on the selection of ingredients (why the choice?), nutrition value, amount of money used, etc.
